Challenge

Dense, multi-level building had many dead zones

Originally built before mobile coverage existed, the thick concrete walls of the Bankstown RSL building were not conducive to indoor mobile coverage, leaving customers frustrated with patchy reception and the General Manager crying out for a solution to resolve their connectivity issues.

Thick concrete walls blocked mobile phone reception

Due to the size of the Bankstown RSL premises, internal 5G coverage was patchy in some parts of the venue and non-existent in others (including the basement parking space). This was a significant issue for risk management, as there is a duty of care to provide customers (particularly the elderly), with the ability to make emergency calls in the case of a trip, fall, or other medical emergency.

Customer friction

Furthermore, with patchy mobile coverage, Bankstown RSL noticed significant customer friction as customers had grown accustomed in recent years to making calls to loved ones and being able to purchase food and drinks through tap to pay and QR code.

Phone calls and tap to pay transactions were not possible in certain locations in the venue, leaving customers frustrated with the service offering provided by Bankstown RSL, and this had an impact on overall customer dwell time.

Solution

MobileCorp has proven experience with In-Building Coverage solutions, ranging from single-cell sites to multi-storey buildings, large warehouses and construction sites.

MobileCorp were only too happy to provide a site assessment and propose a comprehensive wireless mobile coverage solution.

On-Site Assessment

Our certified radio engineers attended the Bankstown RSL site to investigate the mobile coverage issues present.

Our engineers used the Nextivity Compass XR, which collects data on mobile signal strength and maps it onto the building's floor plan using the WavePro app. The Compass XR can even conduct the survey without local internet connectivity.

Nextivity CEL-FI QUATRA Deployment

After cataloguing the many dead zones in Bankstown RSL, MobileCorp proposed the Nextivity CEL-FI QUATRA solution.

The Nextivity CEL-FI QUATRA is an intelligent Active Hybrid DAS, that combines both Active DAS and CEL-FI. This solution directly connects to local mobile base stations through external donor antennas, amplifying that signal in-venue through an array of coverage units and repeaters, using self-organising algorithms.

The Nextivity CEL-FI QUATRA indoor signal amplification is approved by all Australian mobile networks and provides signal boosting in venue without disrupting the native networks or other users’ signals.

On top of fitting out Bankstown RSL with an In-Building Coverage Solution, MobileCorp provided them with a managed service. This managed service gives Bankstown RSL the peace of mind that a professional is monitoring their coverage quality remotely and can respond in real time to rectify coverage if there is any disruption to their service.

Outcome

MobileCorp delivered this solution to Bankstown RSL within 4 weeks. MobileCorp arranged for work to be conducted after hours from 2am to 8am so as not to disrupt normal business, ensuring a very quick fix for a problem that had plagued Bankstown RSL for five years.

The fast rollout ensured Bankstown RSL was covered ahead of their busy Christmas period in December 2024.
Bankstown RSL saw an immediate improvement in coverage, reporting five bars of coverage consistently since the installation. The IBC rollout led to an immediate improvement in customer experience and an instant uplift in services revenue.
The solution worked so well that Bankstown RSL delivered service over the busy Christmas period without a single reported mobile coverage complaint.

“When we opened, our existing solution wasn’t fit for purpose. We knew we needed to reach out to an experienced company. MobileCorp was recommended to us by our carrier and the whole process couldn’t have been easier. We’ve seen our mobile coverage go to five bars. When we first started it was down to one.”
