What is 5G Wireless WAN?

5G is the 5th generation of mobile network. 5G Wireless WAN is the deployment of 5G cellular broadband as an essential part of the network infrastructure.

1980s: 1G delivered analog voice.

Early 1990s: 2G introduced digital voice

Early 2000s: 3G brought mobile data

2010s: 4G ushered in the era of mobile broadband.

2020s: 5G  high speed, negligible latency, and 100x increase in traffic capacity will enable edge computing, autonomous operations, massive IOT, and immersive experiences.

What 5G Wireless WAN solutions are available?

MobileCorp has deployed many 5G Wireless WAN solutions which are typically achieving download speeds in excess of 1GB and upload of 70Mbps.

Business use cases include temporary sites, pop-up stores, branch offices; and links can be primary or failover or provide supplementary bandwidth to cope with traffic spikes or traffic prioritisation.

We have also used a 5G link to transmit video from underwater and aerial drones over the internet.

5g use cases

When should business consider a 5G Wireless WAN solution?

The key drivers for a 5G Wireless WAN deployment in Australia are typically:

  • A network connection is needed quickly.
5G Wireless WAN can be spun up in a matter of days, rather than the months that is often needed for NBN connections at greenfield sites.
  • A network connection is needed for a temporary purpose.
A 5G Wireless WAN operates over a lightweight infrastructure which can often be carried around in a pelican case. Even if a more substantial antenna is required to augment signal strength, the infrastructure is relatively agile.
  • A secondary connection is required to provide network resilience.
A wireless WAN avoids the physical limitations of wires which can be compromised by physical interference, weather, and network outages. A 5G wireless WAN can be utilised as a failover or as the primary link.
  • A 5G link is more cost effective.
A 5G Wireless WAN can be significantly less expensive to deploy as a primary connection for branch sites.

Your Pathway to 5G Wireless WAN

Waiting until the 5G network is fully deployed before acting shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of 5G technology.

Unlike 4G, the activation of 5G is not a case of ‘flipping the switch’.

5G is a mash up of enhanced technologies, new spectrum, and advanced infrastructure. Although all these elements work together, they will roll out in different ways and at different times.

5G is more of a pathway than an event, and that pathway has two lanes – Gigabit-Class LTE and 5G.

Gigabit-Class LTE was launched by Telstra in 2018 and is an important element on the Pathway to 5G.  Not only does it share a dual connection with 5G, but it is a significant performance improvement over 4G.

Gigabit-Class LTE will be the starting lane on the Pathway to 5G for  organisations in locations where 5G is not yet pervasive.

Cradlepoint the State of wireless WAN 2022 white paper

The State of Connectivity in Australia 2024

The State of Connectivity in Australia, 2024,  has found that improved connectivity is a "top priority" for 40% of Australian businesses, yet overall there has been a "lack of urgency" to invest in 5G technology to date.

The report, commissioned by Cradlepoint, part of Ericsson; surveyed more than 500 Australian respondents who were all business owners, C-level executives, or senior managers at businesses with over 250 employees. All were technology decision makers.

Some more findings include:

  • Connectivity is directly linked to revenue growth
  • AI and Machine Learning will demand  review of network connectivity
  • Fixed line connectivity  is causing frustration and costing businesses
